- Our homes in Alberta consume different amounts of power depending on the seasons.
- The easiest way to calculate the RECs needed is to review your power bills for the last 12 months.
- Find the monthly power consumption value at the top of the bill. This number will be on average about 550 kWh (KiloWattHours).
- Add together the monthly power consumption values for the last twelve months. This will add up to on average 6600 kWh.
- Move the decimal point over 3 numbers. 6600 kWh = 6.6 MWh (MegaWattHours)
- A house that uses 6.6 MWh power per year needs 6.6 RECs per year to reassemble the renewable energy package as generated by the wind turbine.
- RECs cost $20 per MWh.
- 6.6 X $20 = $132.
- For $132 + 7.92 GST = $139.72 (average) per year you can offset the coal power pollutions dumped into the air from generating 6.6 MWh of power and designate your power to be generated by a wind turbine.
