Organic PV (very low voltage stuff, think fireflys)
Almost all organic solids are insulators but when their constituent molecules have pi-conjugate systems, electrons can move via pi-electron cloud overlaps. pi-conjugated has to do with higher valence level bonding.
Konarka- invested in by Eastman Kodak, Chevron Texaco., 2004 acquires organic PV research of Siemens.
BASF,Bosch,Merck,&Schott have Euro360M from German government for research.

Printing Solar

BP Solar-BP on NYSE, an early leader in solar, now plans to spend $1Billion on solar. 100MW solar cell manufacturer- drops from #3 to #7 in 2005. plant in Tres Cantos Spain to expand to 300MW, plant in Bangalore India to expand to 300MW, Planning 63MW solar park in Portugal. installing 278 solar installations in Spain for 160 Million Euros. avaiable in some Home Depot stores. 150MW from US plant by 2008. jv with Sun Oasis Co Ltd of China- 25MW, 100MW by 2010. see also solar thermal. Rio Tinto has a [2005] 750,000 tons/year Ilmenite (TiO2) mine in Madagascar that involves cutting down some of the last rainforest in Madagascar. The issue is well presented on the website. Would need to be a mining engineer/geologist to know if there were no better sources of TiO2 available globally, and more of a specialist on TiO2 to understand if tearing down a rainforest could be justified environmentally.
